Richard Hutchinson

Chief Executive Officer

OpenRoad is led by founder and Chief Executive Officer Richard Hutchinson, an insurance industry veteran with over three decades of experience including executive leadership roles at Progressive, Hagerty, and Forge. Before founding OpenRoad, Richard served as President and Chief Operating Officer for Forge Insurance as well as President of Hagerty where he oversaw both personal lines and the commercial insurance business. He also served as President of Hagerty Re (Bermuda). While at Progressive, Richard led the nationwide launch of the telematics business under the Snapshot brand, growing it to over $1 billion. Over the course of his career, he has built and managed multiple successful insurance businesses with executive roles overseeing national and regional field teams, omnichannel distribution channels, as well as product strategy and development. He has also held multiple leadership roles overseeing brand, marketing, pricing, underwriting, and claims across both Personal and Commercial Auto lines of business. Richard is a four-time patent holder for usage-based insurance. Richard has an AB degree from Yale University and an MBA in finance from the University of Chicago. He has several collector cars and enjoys driving them on the open road.

Bryan Ballatore

Chief Revenue Officer

Bryan Ballatore serves as the Chief Revenue Officer of OpenRoad. He leads OpenRoad’s distribution, agency sales, and strategic alliance teams. Bryan is a combat veteran of the United States Navy and has held numerous leadership positions in the insurance and automotive industries. Beginning his career in the automotive space, Bryan worked with auction houses Gooding & Company and Bonhams, before taking a role managing a top-ten international car collection. In 2016, Bryan stepped into the insurance industry transitioning his considerable automotive knowledge into a career with Hagerty Insurance. Over seven years, he held various positions in private client services and later served as the Vice President of the Eastern Region. He last served as Hagerty’s Vice President of Member Programs, tasked with delivering media, events, and roadside benefits to 800K members and creating Radius, an exclusive program for affluent clients. A passionate enthusiast, Bryan also served as a founding Advisory Board member to The World of Speed Museum, was the Chairman of the Morgan Adams Concours selection committee, has written articles for numerous automotive publications, has participated in prestigious automotive events such as the Colorado Grand, California Mille, and the Mille Miglia, and was named one of Sports Car Market’s Top 40 Under 40 in 2017. He holds a BA in Museum Studies from Arizona State University and an MA in Art Business from the University of Manchester.

Justin Moreno

Chief Marketing & Communications Officer

Justin Moreno joins OpenRoad after previously serving as the Chief Marketing Officer for Chubb’s Personal Risk Services, the world's largest publicly traded property and casualty insurer. In his role, Justin oversaw all marketing strategy and activation for Chubb's U.S. personal lines businesses. Prior to Chubb, Justin served as the Vice President of Marketing for Hagerty where he led their global omnichannel marketing practices. Under his leadership, the organization was able to successfully bring all media buying, optimization, audience segmentation, and marketing analytics in house. He also co-created the television series, "The Drive Within," which followed a semiprofessional motorsports team through the course of their season, airing on Motor Trend in 2021. Before joining Hagerty, Justin was the Senior Vice President of Global Products and Solutions at Publicis Media, currently ranked the world’s most valuable advertising agency holding company. In this role, he led specialized digital marketing consulting practices, oversaw the development of propriety strategy and analytics tools, and helped shape the digital strategy and technology stack for many global clients. Justin previously served on the Digital Marketing Program Advisory Council for George Washington University’s School of Business alongside senior executives from brands such as Microsoft, Tesla, Salesforce, AIG, Merck, and Pfizer. He holds a Bachelor of Communications in Advertising & Public Relations from Loyola University Chicago. Justin is an avid Porsche enthusiast and enjoys competing in a variety of motorsport events.

William Edwards

Chief Financial Officer

William Edwards serves as OpenRoad’s Chief Financial Officer and brings over 20 years of operational experience across a variety of industries and geographies. He began his career as an infantry officer in the United States Army before serving as a finance professional and CFO across both public and PE-backed companies. In addition to serving in his current position with OpenRoad, William is also an Operating Partner at Griffin Highline, a holding company that invests in and actively manages insurance operating businesses. His previous roles include serving as a Managing Director at Plains All American, Chief Commercial Officer of Gravity Midstream, Senior Vice President at Holly Frontier Corporation, and most recently as Chief Financial Officer at various PE-backed entities. Prior to his role at Plains All American, Mr. Edwards worked at Simmons & Company International as an investment banking associate where he advised various companies on a range of financial and strategic matters with an emphasis on M&A advisory services. William Edwards received a BS in Economics with a focus in Mechanical Engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point and his MBA from Harvard Business School.

Mark VanDam

Chief Underwriting Officer

Mark VanDam serves as OpenRoad’s Chief Underwriting Officer. Mark is an industry veteran with 35 years of experience in insurance operations leading various groups in building, servicing, and marketing insurance programs. Before joining OpenRoad, Mark spent 3 years consulting for Forge Insurance Company where he aided the organization in the building of new insurance products and systems in the commercial auto space. Prior to his time with Forge, Mark spent nearly 14 years with Hagerty and mostly recently served as their Chief Underwriting Officer. In this role, Mark led many of Hagerty’s insurance operations including claims, agency sales, product management, product development, actuarial, state filings, as well as overseeing their services center. Before joining Hagerty, he served as Regional Vice President at American International Group in their personal lines’ division. In this role, Mark was responsible for P&L management for several regions and was intimately involved in pricing, product development, agency sales, claims, and various initiatives aimed at process improvements. He started his career at Foremost Insurance Company where he served in roles such as Operations Manager and Regional Product Manager. Mark holds an undergraduate degree from Michigan State University and an MBA from Grand Valley State University. When Mark isn’t working to provide auto enthusiasts better collector vehicle insurance coverage, you can find him on the golf course counting birdies.

Scott Johansson

Vice President of Insurance Operations

Scott Johansson serves as OpenRoad’s Vice President of Insurance Operations, bringing 20 years of experience across claims and product management to the team. Before joining OpenRoad, Scott spent over 18 years with Hagerty most recently serving as a Senior Regional Product Manager. While is this role, Scott developed and executed a variety of strategic initiatives aimed at honing their program segmentation, while also leading several projects focused on business growth including managing the development and launch of the Modern Collector segment across all 50 states. He played a key role in their carrier transition as well as improving their claims systems. Scott was also responsible for all profitability and growth strategies in 14 Eastern states, directly overseeing a $150 million in written premium. His leadership extended to managing cross-team communications, performance analytics, and ensuring regulatory compliance, while also leading a cross-functional team responsible for developing coverage programs, pricing models, and underwriting guidelines. During his tenure, he also served as their Senior Manager of Claims where he oversaw all claims operations, the team responsible for delivering exceptional customer service and ensuring regulatory compliance. Among his many other achievements in this role, Scott helped to improve department performance metrics to significantly surpass already impressive audit scores, while also integrating various technology improvements to enhance adjuster performance. He began his career at Hagerty as a Claims Adjuster, handling complex claims across various segments, including auto, marine, and high-net-worth clients. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations from Northern Michigan University and an Associate in Claims.
